INTRODUCTION =============== Since HAL is now getting really close people are really getting into the HAL-fever now. The amount of interest in HAL from visitors and the press is ever growing. Teams have been busy with the organisation and the last preparations. --..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..-- 2. If you are interested in working during the speaker sessions to insure the speakers are prepared, problems are solved, and interaction with other groups goes smoothly, please consider joining the team. Greg Newby Stage-management -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- Transport Team -------------- This'll be our final call out to possible volunteers. We are still looking for you! If you want to volunteer, please mail to jabba@home.nl What functions are there on the HAL transport team? We will be driving: - people from the stations to the UT where HAL2001 will take place during the night when the normal busses don't drive. - over the terrain to transport your luggage to the campsite; - food for the catering to and from the kitchen; - the dustbins to the container; - whenever driving is needed. For the transport during the night from the station to the camp-site you can call 0031(0)6 29018919. This number will be in use from august the 6th and will be the general number for transport contact. So if you are stranded somewhere in the middle of the night you can call us. The Carpool-database is now online! If you are going by care and have room for others or if you are looking for that room, you register yourself in the carpool database http://www.hal2001.org/carpool/index.php -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- Booklet Team ------------ After hard work from all the team members, the booklet has finally gone to the printer. Of course, there is still some work left: the program needs to be finalized and printed, and the map (which looks great already!) needs to be updated prior to HAL. Thanks to all team members for this accomplishment, and also to all the other people that contributed to the booklet! Sander -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- Web Team -------- The Web team hopes many of you are willing to drop by every now and then to comment om the lectures, the workshops, the campsite, the food, the event. You need not necessarily be a good writer, though they are welcome too. We need reporters! People who tell us their experiences! That way you'll enable us to show the poor people who are unable to attend what it's like at HAL2001. You'll find the Web team next to the Info desk and the Bar. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- Catering Team ------------- Just a reminder: If you need a special diet and you do not want to cook yourself, please mail me in advance or leave the message at the info desk before 12.00u on the first day you arrive at the HAL campsite (indicate on what days you intend to eat at the Mensa). We will pass the message on to the Mensa of the University. They can, to a certain degree, prepare diners for people with allergies. Unfortunatly it is not possible to serve special diet meals in the catering tent. We do not have the means to preserve single meals in a sanitary and safe way. The special meals can be eaten in the Mensa restaurant within the Bastille building. With special diets I mean things like lactose intolerance or sugar free diet. The University kitchen cannot prepare kosher food. In that case you will have to cook for yourself. There will also be a vegetarian version of the HAL 2001 menu. This will be served in the catering tent. If you want the vegetarian diner you can sign up for it when you buy your meal ticket for the day. To sign up you have to buy a scratchcard at the cashiers counter in the main tent and tell the cashier that you want to use it as a meal ticket for the standard or the vegetarian diner. This has to be done before 12.00h on the same day. You can also sign up for more days in advance. Saves you the trouble of having to go to the cashiers office every day. Greetings from the top of the food chain, Yoix joyce@wwcn.org --..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..-- 3. TICKET SALES =============== Ticket presales & reservation closed We closed the online ticket sales. Please don't email us that you want to make a payment or a reservation. This is not possible anymore, even if you are Linus Torvalds or Bill Gates. If you did not buy your ticket online, you can buy your ticket at the entrance desk (details are elsewhere in this newsletter). We advise you to arrive on Thursday afternoon or Thursday evening. We believe it is very unlikely that we are facing a sold out situation already then. We think we can prevent a sold out situation also on Friday. We made plans to upgrade the event and add resources if the number of visitors is higher then we expected. If you paid for your ticket and got your confirmation email that means we are expecting you at the entrance desk. We will make sure that you will be able to enter HAL and participate, whatever time you arrive as long as it is before Sunday 12.00. The online ticket sales was quite successful. We are currently busy with the final calculations. In the next newsletter we will give some more numbers concerning the presales and the total number of people we are expecting at HAL. --..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..-- 4. PUBLIC TRANSPORT =================== To get to the HAL terrain using public transportation, a few possible ways are being outlined below. First off: if you are travelling the last part by train, you can ask the conductor or ticket-salesperson for information on the destinations described here. Below this article is a small list with some routes of important trains including directions to get more detailed times/stations from the NS (Dutch railroad-company). The departure-times and platform-numbers are noted at the station on big yellow signs. Ways of travelling towards HAL ------------------------------ 1. Via station Enschede-Drienerlo (close to the HAL terrain) This route is the easiest if you carry equipment by train due to the small distance between the last station and the HAL terrain. For this, you have to take the "stop-trein" (train which stops at small stations/villages) from Hengelo or Zwolle station towards Enschede-Drienerlo. 2. Via station Enschede Though it is somewhat further away from the HAL terrain, the trip via station Enschede is in some cases somewhat easier as you dont have to change trains every so often. Arriving at station Enschede you take the bus which stands in front of the station (take notice of the signs you can read on the bus!) : line 1 - towards the campus (sign "Universiteit" on the bus) You should ask the busdriver to stop at the campus/universitity. You will arrive very near the HAL terrain. line 3 - towards Hengelo (sign "Hengelo" or "Hasseler Es" on the bus) You should ask the busdriver to stop at the "viaduct" in front of the campus. When you are there, the HAL terrain is to the north when you exit the bus. 3. Via station Hengelo Exiting at Hengelo station you take bus line 3 towards Enschede (sign on the bus reads "Glanerbrug-Zuid"). Ask the busdriver to stop at the "viaduct" in front of the campsite. When you are there, the HAL terrain is to the south of where you exit the bus. Some information on buying tickets ---------------------------------- Busses are paid with so called 'strippen' or zones. For the trip from Enschede to the campus (with line 3 or line 1) you need 2 zones. For this you can buy a ticket ("strippenkaart") in the bus which costs about 4 guilders and contains 2-3 zones. You can also get them at the train-station at the (yellow) ticket-dispensers or at the ticket-sales where they are about 8-9 guilders, but contain some 15 zones. The ticket dispensers accept Dutch coins or ATM-passes (*no* credit-cards). Tickets for the train are also bought at the ticket-dispensers or at the ticket-saletion, which will get you to the University Campus (HAL terrain) for about 10 guilders. The expensive way is just to grab a cab without buying this ticket, you then will have to pay some 20 to 25 guilders for the fair. For clarity: the "trein-taxi" ticket is valid on all cabs at the train station in Enschede until the last train has arrived (which is about 2 am at night), don't let yourself be fooled into paying more than you ought to. Some train routes ----------------- from big stations only, crossovers in between: Schiphol - Amersfoort (depending on the time you do or do not have to crossover here) - Enschede Schiphol - Hengelo - Enschede Drienerlo Schiphol - Zwolle - Enschede Drienerlo Amsterdam Centraal - Amersfoort (depending on the time you do or do not have to crossover here) - Enschede Amsterdam Centraal - Hengelo - Enschede Drienerlo Amsterdam Centraal - Zwolle - Enschede Drienerlo For more information regarding train-routes/departures, please inform at the dutch train site: http://www.ns.nl/reisinfo/ or the german one: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/detect.exe/bin/query.exe/d The fields you can fill in on the dutch site, translated: Van - Departing from Naar - Arriving at Wanneer - When; Vandaag - Today; Morgen - Tomorrow; Anders - Otherwise (dd/mm/yy) Aankomst- of vertrektijd - Time of arrival or departure; Aankomst - Arrival; Vertrek - Departure ; Tijd - Time You will get a list with the times and stations, some terms: Spoor - Track/Platform Soort - Type of train Richting/Eindbestemming - Direction/Place of arrival --..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..--..-- 5. GENERAL UPDATE ================= * Liz Turner, our graphical designer, has decided to release the HAL icons into the Public Domain. You can use these to print your own baseball caps, banners, to give your club's T-shirt a HAL 2001 twist, etcetera. Read more on the website: http://www.hal2001.org/hal/05Participate/logos/index.html * Robert and Ronnie have written a carpool database. You can use it to find a ride to/from HAL, or to offer one. Make HAL start already in your car, and find fellow hackers at: http://www.hal2001.org/carpool/index.php * Space Station Five will be broadcasting on the analogue airwaves. So be sure to bring a FM radio, and tune it already to 97.1 FM! Oh and by the way, if you happen to know the pirate station broadcasting at that same frequency in the eastern Netherlands, drop us a line :) * If you come with a camper, please mail eric@signature.nl to notify your presence. We can then monitor how many campers we can expect, and we can arrange sufficient space. * We really have to clear the camping grounds on monday 13th (because of a fresmen's festival that partly starts on monday already). If you have rented a large tent then please ask the rental company to arrive on monday 13th to take it apart and remove it from the camping grounds. * The programme is online! Now with timetables and details and everything! Take a look at: http://www.hal2001.org/hal/03Topics/index.html * Some last minute info from the sports centre: a swimming ticket is NLG 3,50 and you can swim from about 12:00 noon until 18:00. Swimming suits are mandatory, so be sure to bring one! EOT _______________________________________________ Announce mailing list Announce@hal2001.org http://www.hal2001.org/mailman/listinfo/announce
